Cognitive behavioural coaching

We all think and “talk” to ourselves – constantly – throughout each day. We all have a voice in our heads, that’s subtle, but very convincing! Unfortunately, this internal dialogue usually consists of rigid, negative thoughts that are unhelpful at best. These thoughts often prevent us from obtaining what we desire in our professional lives, and block us unnecessarily.

  • “As a leader, I need to know how to do everything”.
  • “I’m not good enough for this job!”
  • “I need to be perfect in everything I do”.
  • “When something goes wrong at work, it’s the end of the world”.

This inner voice is insidious, because we truly believe the negative things we tell ourselves. And we repeat them. Often.

As a cognitive behavioural coach, I work closely with individuals to help them address these negative thoughts by telling themselves a different, more positive story that will help, not hinder them. These beliefs are usually deeply engrained, but I guide and help them every step of the way.

I work closely with the person to put in place an action plan with clearly defined objectives that are based on behaviour. Challenging thoughts and incorporating new patterns of behaviour are powerful ways of shifting negative thinking and introducing much more positive, constructive thoughts.

The cognitive behavioural approach to coaching is in the “here and now” and is very much solution-focussed. The big advantage of this approach is that it empowers the person, who gradually becomes their own “coach”.
